Systemic Racism Project

The Systemic Racism Project explains how systemic racism works in contemporary America to a wide and diverse public audience.

Conceptualized and directed by Brown University Professor Tricia Rose with support from the Mellon Foundation and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Systemic Racism Project explains how systemic racism works in contemporary America to a wide and diverse public audience.

At the core of the SRP is the How Systemic Racism Works website (HSRW), a highly accessible, interactive experience that enables visitors to encounter and consider the human impacts of systemic racism by centering the experiences of an intergenerational Black family and their community.

To accomplish this, the site uses accessible and engaging character-driven stories, easy-to-use and thought-provoking interactive features and beautiful visual design inspired by African American aesthetic and expressive cultural practices.

Using a broad set of data, HSRW reveals how systemic racism is produced and maintained in compounding ways across five key areas of contemporary American society: health, education, housing, criminal justice and wealth, with a clear focus on the human impacts of systemic racism on individuals, families and communities

HSRW content is fully grounded in the rigorous research of Professor Tricia Rose and her team and is built in collaboration with interactive experience and digital learning experts. The site will launch to the public in Spring 2025.

Metaracism

Released to superior reviews, MetaracismHow Systemic Racism Works—And How We Break Free by Tricia Rose (Basic Books, 2024) reveals how systemic racism works by re-telling three case studies through a systems lens: the murders of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, and the felony conviction of Kelley Williams-Bolar.

In addition to the book itself, Metaracism learning materials, suitable for book club and other discussion-based groups, include:

  • Discussion guides and prompts for facilitators
  • Prompts for participants/learners
  • “For further learning” suggestions

"Metaracism" offers the clear-eyed analysis we urgently need.
